Aperiodic tilings and the atoroidal/hyperbolic distinction

I shall explain how an important and unresolved problem concerning the fundamental groups of compact spaces could be answered by the construction of a suitable set of aperiodic Wang tiles. I shall explain the unpublished results obtained by a student of mine (Ziliak) that provide small sets of deterministic Wang tilings with some (but not all) of the desired properties.
